Brenda’s French Soul Food is one of the hottest eateries for brunch in the Bay area. Curated by the culinary expertise of Louisiana-born, head chef, and proprietor, Brenda Buenviaje, the restaurant offers a healthy mix of savory and sweet with a down south spin to San Francisco’s already tasteful foodie scene. The hip little bistro opened its doors in 2007, and there’s been a line out front ever since. Menu items like shrimp etouffee and grillades and grits make the wait well worth it, but it’s the signature beignets that bring both locals and visitors from all over San Francisco to the Tenderloin District. Granny Smith apple and molten Ghirardelli chocolate are sweet options, but the beignet making the biggest splash is the mouth watering, Cajun styled crawfish. Filled with gooey cheddar cheese, scallions and a generous helping of crawfish, this aromatic twist on the French fritter has been drawing crowds to Brenda’s since its inception.
The interior is brightly lit with an artsy vibe, drawing on high ceilings to air out the space, which is a sight for sore eyes — and hungry tummies — after waiting in line. But for those looking to have a little nibble and a chat while they wait, Brenda’s sister cafe, Libby Jane’s, will do the trick. Grab a coffee and a scone to pass the time or give the Divisadero Street venture, Brenda’s Meat and Three, a go. Regardless of how you choose to try Buenviaje’s signature style, one fact remains the same.
